“Love for Love” (also named “Stay and Think”)
words and music by Frances Ridley Havergal

Like the previous hymn, both the words and the music for this were written very
late in her life, and posthumously published in 1881, in Loyal Responses  The
Last Melodies of Frances Ridley Havergal with Other Poems and Tunes.  This was
the fourth of the nine scores at the end of the book, after the 31 poems of Loyal
Responses. This had two titles, “Stay and Think” and “Love for Love.”

Love for Love.

I John 4:16

1. Knowing that the God on high,
With a tender Father’s grace,
Waits to hear your faintest cry,
Waits to show a Father’s face,—
Stay and think!—How He loves ! oh, should not you
Love this gracious Father too?

2. Knowing Christ was crucified,
Knowing that He loves you now
Just as much as when He died
With the thorns upon His brow,—
Stay and think!—How He loves ! oh, should not you
Love this blessèd Saviour too?

3. Knowing that a Spirit strives
With your weary, wandering heart,
Who can change the restless lives,
Pure and perfect peace impart,—
Stay and think!—How He loves ! oh, should not you
Love this loving Spirit too?
